Located on the western zone of Madeira's southern coast, between Estreito da Calheta and Paul do Mar, Jardim do Mar (tranlates to garden of the sea) seamlessly blends centuries of history with the beauty of nature and the sea. Founded in the 15th century, the small village has been a guardian of the island's evolution, sheltering stories of its early pioneers.
Flanked by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, its coast presents a serene setting that has captivated generations. Starting as an isolated fishing enclave, this peaceful refuge was only accessible by boats under favorable weather conditions or on foot from Calheta, via paths carved by man that ascended to the slopes of Prazeres.
The 1960s brought roads and with them, greater accessibility, yet Jardim do Mar's unmistakable charm persisted. Its picturesque streets, paved in traditional Portuguese style and adorned with various designs, dotted with traditional white-washed houses and red-clay roofs, bear witness to its rich heritage.
For surfing enthusiasts, the village is a treasured destination. Although the waves are at the mercy of nature, the village boasts the distinction of once hosting a world championship event. Bolstered by a modern commitment to ecotourism, Jardim do Mar today symbolizes the beautiful fusion of history, nature, and sport.
Jardim do Mar invites you to an experience where history meets the rhythm of the waves, all set against a backdrop of unparalleled beauty.

The Promenade
Stretching from one end to the other, the coastal promenade measures approximately half a mile (around 800m). This flat walkway is a favorite for those seeking an alternative to the typical hilly terrains of Madeira.
The Village
Jardim do Mar boasts picturesque footpaths, many of which are inaccessible to vehicles. With several dead-ends, we recommend using our map / tours to navigate. We have two walk / trail recommendations. One of about 2km, having a maximum elevation of around 50m, and one of 3km that takes you to two different viewpoints above the village. These routes pass by all bars and restaurants of Jardim do Mar: Joes's Bar, Portinho and Tarmar. Make sure to try some of the local specialities!
To Calheta, Via Old and New Road
With the construction of the new tunnel and the renovation of the road leading to Calheta, an unusual addition for Madeira was made: a sidewalk. Starting in Jardim do Mar, follow the old road (Antiga ER223), pass through the old tunnel, and then walk the sidewalk, which extends up to the beginning of the residential area. Taking this route to the small supermarket near the round-a-bout covers roughly 2.5km and ascends nearly 300m. Add another 1km to get to the Pukiki Cocktail bar.
PR20 to Prazeres, Viewpoint
A challenging trail for seasoned hikers, this steep path climbs the cliffs via many natural, uneven stone steps. After only a few hundred meters, you'll encounter a scenic viewpoint elevated about 100m above the village. The entire trek to Prazeres church and its neighboring cafes spans around 2.5km, with an impressive ascent of 630m.
To Paul do Mar
While there's mention of a "coastal path" extending 2.5km to Paul do Mar, it's essentially a rocky shoreline without a clear trail. Depending on weather and tidal conditions, it can pose significant risks and isn't promoted as a recommended hike. An alternative route is the tunnel. Though still 2.5km, it's not the most delightful of walks. However, compared to other tunnels on Madeira, it experiences relatively light traffic.
